Eleven opposition forces have agreed to mark Ukraine's Independence Day jointly, said first deputy leader of the Batkivschyna party Oleksandr Turchynov.
"We have made the decision to celebrate Independence Day jointly. All opposition forces will gather at the Taras Shevchenko monument at about 11 a.m. and then march along the streets of Kyiv," he told reporters near the Pechersky District Court on Monday.
A joint rally will be held afterwards on Mykhailivska Square, he said.
Eleven political forces have agreed to join the events, he continued. "Availing myself of this opportunity, I would like to say the following to the residents of Kyiv and all visitors: Since the authorities have refused to celebrate Independence Day decently, let us unite and march along the streets of Kyiv and demonstrate that ‘independence’ is not an empty word for us. It is our life and our future," he said.
Turchynov urged participants in the rally on Khreschatyk Street near the Pechersky Court, which is hearing the gas case against ex-prime minister and Batkivschyna leader Yulia Tymoshenko, to join in this action.
Reports indicated earlier that Kyiv Mayor Oleksandr Popov said on Aug. 12 that he would file an inquiry with a court on whether mass opposition actions on Independence Day on Aug. 24 are lawful, if applications for such actions arrive.
