Head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov believes that the tent city outside the Pechersky District Court in Kyiv will not be an obstacle to the celebration of the Independence Day in the capital city.

"I think if there are no political actions of such kind, which will be aimed at impeding the festivities, then there is nothing to worry about," he said at a press conference last week.

"I believe we need not take any active steps," he added, stressing that it is his personal opinion.

Popov also said that all the festivities on Aug. 24 in Kyiv will by held along the entire length of the central street – Khreschatyk, from its crossing with the Bohdan Khmeln ytsky Street to the European Square.

At the same time, he recalled that there is a court ruling, which banns mass actions in downtown this day.

However, he said it is up to law-enforcement officials to implement the court’s decision.

"Whether they will do this or not is up to them," he said.

Rallies of supporters and opponents of former prime minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko have been held on the Khreschatyk Street outside Pechersky District Court since Aug. 5, when Tymoshenko was arrested.

The protesters put up tents on the city’s central street.

The police are maintaining order.

The rallies are going peacefully.
