The ban on advertisement of alcoholic beverages and tobacco articles outdoors and on television has taken effect on January 1, says the bill on amendments to the advertisement law, which was signed by the President on April 7, 2008.

The bill forbids presenting in TV programs any information of advertising character in a narrative or musical form about sponsors or producers of alcohol starting on January 1.

Beside that, advertisement of alcohol and tobacco, relevant commodity and service brands, as well as neighboring rights, by outdoor means is also forbidden from January 1.

The document also restricts advertisement of those goods in specialized publications, trade centers, exhibitions and other places.

As Ukrainian News reported, in late December 2008, Verkhovna Rada (parliament) deputies Olena Kondratiuk, Oleksandr Abdullin (both of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc faction) and Olena Bondarenko (Party of Regions faction) proposed that the parliament refrain from barring advertisement of alcohol and tobacco outdoors and on TV before 2010 because of the global financial crisis.
