Kyiv, June 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) - A man has been killed in an explosion in a elevator lift in a residential house in downtown Kyiv, police said on Friday.

The explosion rocked the lift at about 3pm when it was moving between the third and the fourth floors of a residential house at 57 Bogdana Khmelnytskoho Street, the city police told Interfax-Ukraine.

According to the preliminary data, a relatively powerful explosive device may have been fixed behind the lift's back wall. The explosion damaged the lift well and staircases and broke several windows.

The police have yet to identify the man, who was presumably a businessman, and find out how the explosive device came to be in the lift.
