Additional measures on fighting the flu epidemic are to be taken in Kyiv, according to the city administration.

The issue was discussed on Friday at a meeting of the emergency anti-epidemiological commission at Kyiv City State Administration, which was chaired by Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky.

"As mayor of the capital and chairman of Kyiv City State Administration, I'm greatly concerned over reports about the consequences of this disease in other cities," he said.

He expressed concern that Kyiv, a city which is visited by over one million people every day, could be particularly exposed to the epidemic if no urgent measures are taken.

"From now on, the headquarters on fighting the flu will hold daily meetings, including online ones, under my chairmanship," Chernovetsky said.

Kyiv's chief state sanitary doctor, Oleksandr Ponomarenko, said that 16,763 flu patients had been registered so far, which is 20% more compared to last week.

Most of the patients include teenagers and able-bodied people, he said.

The sickness rate among students grew by 2.2 times last week, he said.

Ponomarenko also said that Kyiv had not yet reached the epidemic threshold, but this could happen by the end of this week, as the threshold is 23,950 cases.
