The situation with the epidemic of flu and acute respiratory viral infections in Kyiv is easing, but a second outbreak of the epidemic may occur at the end of December or at the beginning of January of the next year, health officials have said.

First Deputy Head of the Main Department of Health Care and Medical Provision at Kyiv City State Administration Vitaliy Mukharev gave the forecasts of medical employees at a sitting of Kyiv city council of churches and religious organizations on Tuesday.

According to him, a third outbreak of flu also may occur and in Kyiv it could come in autumn of next year.

"Over 128,000 Kyiv residents were ill with flu during the period of the epidemic and this is about 4% of the officially registered population of Kyiv. A total of 5,200 were ill with seasonal flu. Some 2.5% of those taken ill were hospitalized. Currently about two thirds of the hospitalized people have been discharged. The situation is easing," Mukharev said.

He also said that the A/H1N1 flu virus was confirmed in 88 cases.

"The infection rate in Kyiv still exceeds the epidemic threshold by 1.3 times," the official said.

The options for cooperation between Kyiv’s authorities and religious organizations to overcome the epidemic of flu and its consequences in the capital were also considered at the meeting, as well as the possible signing of agreements by religious organization on cooperation with health care agencies, holding charitable events among groups of people with low incomes, and work on the defense of public morals.
