Municipal enterprise Kyiv Metropolitan saw a loss of about Hr 210 million in 2009, Kyiv Metropolitan head Petro Myroshnikov said during a hotline in Kyiv on Jan. 21, adding that this was according to tentative data.

The main reason for the company’s unprofitability is that the current tariffs for passenger transportation do not cover costs. The actual cost of one trip in 2009 was Hr 1.26.

Myroshnikov said that the Kyiv subway’s financial indicators would be satisfactory if the tariff is about Hr 2.50, but any increase in the tariff depends exclusively on the Kyiv city authorities.

He also said that the revenues of the Kyiv subway from activity in 2009 were Hr 705.3 million, including Hr 558.8 million from passenger transportation, Hr 21.8 million from rental payments for subway premises, and Hr 7.4 million from advertising. Another Hr 68.8 million was received from the city budget for the transportation of people entitled to benefits, though the company provided a total of Hr 291 million worth of such services.
