You're reading: Experts: Morning smog in Kyiv not caused by wildfires in Russia

The smog that was observed in Kyiv on Monday, August 9, morning was not caused by wildfires in Russia, Director of the Institute of Hydrometeorology Volodymyr Osadchy said.

"I cannot affirm that this was traces [of smoke] from Russia," he said during a press conference in Kyiv on Monday, August 9, saying the smog could be explained by local reasons.

He added that such smog appears in the morning and moves through the atmosphere in the afternoon. "This is a typical physical process," the expert said.

Osadchy assumed that "small local fires in Ukraine" could cause such smog.

He also noted that the smoke seen in Kyiv last week, had "local reasons."

"That was not smoke from Russia," he said.
