The Sviatoshynsky District Police Department in Kyiv will investigate the circumstances of a fire that broke out at warehouses near the Nyvky subway station, the media liaisons center of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry's main office in Kyiv has told Interfax-Ukraine.

The center said that the police would base their investigation on conclusions made by the Emergencies Ministry. If the cause of the fire is arson, a criminal case will be opened and investigated by the police. If the reason for the fire is the violation of fire safety rules, the case will be investigated by prosecutors, the center said.

As reported, a fire broke out at storage building No.3 owned by OJSC Verkon in Kyiv’s Sviatoshyn district at 67 Peremohy Avenue at 1805 on August 15. It took over 11 hours to put out the fire. No people were killed or injured in the fire.

According to the Emergencies Ministry, the fire destroyed about 30,000 square meters of walls, floors and household appliances stored in the warehouse building. The rescue units of the Emergencies Ministry have saved storage facilities and appliances on an area of about 20,000 square meters.

The cause of the fire is thought to be the violation of fire safety rules while carrying out welding during roof repairs.
