Prosecutors will investigate the case of a fire that broke out at appliance warehouses near the Nyvky metro station in Kyiv, Ukrainian Deputy Prosecutor General and Kyiv Prosecutor Yuriy Udartsov has said.

"The prosecutor’s office of Sviatoshynsky district has instituted criminal proceedings… A criminal case opened by the police for the breach of fire safety regulations has been obtained on demand and merged with common proceedings. So the prosecutor’s office will investigate the case," he said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Udartsov said that an approximate amount of damage caused by the fire had already been established.

"Eldorado Ltd. estimated the approximate amount their loss at over UAH 110 million. This figure will further be adjusted on the basis of the inventory documents. The building of the burned warehouse is estimated to be worth over UAH 5 million," he said.

Udartsov said that it was early to talk about the cause of the fire at the warehouses, because the investigation into the case had just begun.

As reported, a fire broke out at storage building No.3 owned by OJSC Vercon in Kyiv’s Sviatoshynsky district at 67 Peremohy Avenue at 1805 on August 15. It took over 11 hours to put out the fire. Nobody was killed or injured in the fire.

According to the Emergencies Ministry, the fire destroyed about 30,000 square meters of walls, floors and household appliances stored in the warehouse building. The rescue units of the Emergencies Ministry managed to save storage facilities and appliances on an area of about 20,000 square meters.

The cause of the fire is thought to be the violation of fire safety rules while carrying out welding during roof repairs.

The police opened a criminal case on a fire that broke out at warehouses near the Nyvky metro station in Kyiv under Article 270 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (the violation of fire safety rules).
