The Kyiv municipal administration has postponed the increase of the subway fare in Kyiv from Hr 1.7 to Hr 2 that was planned for August 28.

An employee of Kyivskyi Metropoliten, the municipal enterprise that operates the Kyiv subway system, announced this to Ukrainian News.

The subway fare remained unchanged at Hr 1.7 and the old tokens remained in use as of August 28.

The employee of did not specify when the subway fare will be raised.

The press service of the Kyiv municipal administration told Ukrainian News that the Kyiv municipal administration's deputy head Anatolii Holubchenko was presently studying the justification for the Hr 2 subway fare.

"We are checking again whether this tariff corresponds to an economically justified level and studying the profitability and problematic financial issues of the municipal enterprise. However, at the same time, we cannot but implement a court decision," Holubchenko is quoted as saying.

According to the press service, a decision on introduction of the new subway fare of Hr 2 will be made immediately after a detailed study of the situation is completed.

The Kyiv municipal administration decided to raise the subway fare from Hr 1.7 to Hr 2 on August 28.

The Kyiv municipal administration raised public transport fares by a factor of 3-4 to Hr 1.5-2 on November 4, 2008.

However, a working group set up by the Cabinet of Ministers and the Antimonopoly Committee recommended that the Kyiv municipal administration lower the transport fares after investigating the economic justification for the new fares.

As a result, the municipal administration lowered the transport fares by Hr 0.3-0.5 to Hr 1.5-1.7 and increased the cost of travel cards by 15-150% from January 31, 2009.
