You're reading: Kyiv Metropoliten leaves possibility of further fare increase open

Kyiv Metropoliten does not exclude the possibility of a further increase in the fare for the capital's subway if there is an increase in the cost of energy and the products used by the subway.

"We don’t know what the price of heat will be. The subway used to pay about Hr 17 million for the heating of stations and working areas and for hot water until the current year. But all of you know that the gas price has increased and we don’t know yet what the tariff for heat will be. When we have the tariffs, we will take the corresponding decisions," said Finance Director of Kyiv Metropoliten Yuriy Koshmak at a press conference on Monday.

He also noted that the enterprise does not intend to address Kyiv City State Administration with corresponding proposals.

According to Koshmak’s evaluation, the cost of the technical and industrial goods used by the subway increased by 1.61 times compared to 2008.

"The subway needs these goods: we have to repair escalators, wagons and working areas. After some time we will make calculations and submit corresponding offers. Time will show how long this fare will remain," he said.

Koshmak also said that, according to the enterprise’s evaluations, fares would not rise by the end of the year.

According to his calculations, the annual level of expenditures will equal Hr 1.1. billion, while the enterprise’s income from passenger transportation amounts to UAH 600-700 million.

According to the financial director, the subway spends Hr 215 million per year on the transportation of passengers entitled to benefits, while the level of compensation equals UAH 74 million.

He also noted that increase of the fare for the capital’s subway from Hr 1.70 to Hr 2 will bring the subway additional income of Hr 5-6 million per month.
