Parliament gives green light for Kyiv to create district councils

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has granted the right to the territorial community of Kyiv and Kyiv City Council to decide on the creation of district councils in the city.

A total of 245 lawmakers out of the 423 registered in the parliament's session hall on Tuesday voted for a bill of amendments to the law on the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv.

The law foresees that district councils in the city can be created under a decision taken by the territorial community at a local referendum or under a decision taken by the city council.

The decisions by the territorial community or Kyiv City Council on the creation or non-creation of district councils should be taken before the next elections.
