You're reading: Ukrainian nationalists hold rally in central Kyiv

The pan-Ukrainian association Freedom is holding a rally at the monument of Taras Shevchenko in Kyiv on Thursday evening, demanding recognition of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

Some 1,000 people have gathered, according to law enforcement services.

They are holding flags with party symbols, national flags and red and black flags of the Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian Nationalistic Self Defense (UNA-UNSO) nationalist organization.

The demonstrators are chanting: "UPA Must be Recognized!", and "Glory to Ukraine, Glory to Heroes!"

A march is expected to be held after the rally.

Meanwhile, about 150 Communist Party supporters have gathered near the monument of Vladimir Lenin.

They are carrying posters, reading: "We Remember Bandera’s Atrocities!" and "The Bandera and Shukhevych Decrees Must be Repealed!"

The Kyiv city authorities on Wednesday turned to a court to ban mass rallies in the center of Kyiv on Oct. 14.

The association Freedom’s website reported on Thursday that the district administrative court in Kyiv had banned its rally.
