You're reading: Kyiv postpones construction of new waste incinerator

Kyiv has postponed the construction of a new waste incinerator in the city, according to deputy head of Kyiv city administration, Oleksandr Mazurchak.

"We’re not ready for the construction of the incinerator technically and psychologically," he said at a press conference on Thursday.

Mazurchak said that he supports an idea of increasing separate solid waste collection. This year additional 2,000 garbage containers would be installed in Kyiv.

Mazurchak said that Kyiv city administration plans to start reconstruction of the Energy incinerator next year.

"Next year I see an opportunity to start reconstructing the Energy incinerator. Today the cost of the reconstruction is UAH 240 million," he said.

He said that today there are several companies, which are ready to be investors in the project.

He added that over UAH 100 million out of UAH 240 million would be spent on the upgrade of incinerator pollution abatement system.

"This would be an absolutely new quality of the incinerator," he said.

He said that the reconstruction project has been drawn up and is under examination.

If the reconstruction were realized, the incinerator would be absolutely environment friendly, he added.

In addition, the incinerator would generate 270 Gcal of heat to supply it to the heating system. Two electricity generation units with the 11 MW generating capacity each would be built and electricity would be transmitted to neighbor power lines.

"Then we’ll return to the issue of the new waste incinerator," he said.

Mazurchak said that three firms submitted projects on the construction of the new waste incinerator, including a Japanese firm. However, investors put forward some additional requirements.

"These are arduous negotiations. I think that in the near future the construction of new incinerators would be rather problematic," he said.

Kyiv city administration is considering an alternative. In particular, an agreement with Kyiv regional administration on the construction of the waste incinerators in the region has been signed.

Mazurchak said that regional power plans to build up to ten waste incinerators in Kyiv region. They would be located around Kyiv.

"We’re ready to integrate with them to some extent and bring waste to their incinerators," he said.
