MOSCOW - The Russian Football Union has urged football fans not to behave provocatively during the European football championship.

"The Russian Football Union and the national football team urge all true football fans not to yield to hooligans’ provocations and to provide all assistance to organizers of the matches in security matters," the Russian Football Union said in an official statement, posted on its website.

"We urge all football fans now in Poland to remember that they represent Russia. Please respect yourselves, your country and your team," it said.

The UEFA announced on Saturday that it is opening a case against the Russian Football Union on charges of committing disciplinary offences in connection with Russian football fans’ unseemly conduct.

Russian fans threw flares to the football pitch and demonstrate banners with obscene inscriptions in Wroclaw during a Group A match between the Russian and Czech national teams, earlier reports said.

The UEFA also said that it would probe Russian football fans’ alleged insults against Czech players.

The Russian team won 4:1 in a match against the Czech team on June 8.
