They wear Laboutin boots and are irresistible to men.

<yandex:full-text>The girls from Cabaret Crazy Horse are already here, so you can get your last-minute tickets to see what may be the hottest show out there.

In 1951, Allen Bernardine opened the Crazy Horse Saloon which soon became a popular venue on the Paris night scene.

The cabaret’s chic and creative dance numbers were well-received by the audience. While preserving its heritage, over the decades the show has become more technologically spectacular with special effects, kaleidoscopic lighting and pulsing music.

Famous among the Paris elite, the girls even inspired Salvador Dali to create his famous lip-shaped couch, which eventually appeared in the cabaret’s show and inspired the design of a bottle in its own line of perfume.

The Crazy Horse turns seduction and allurement into an art form. This long-running act has performed in front of such luminaries as President John F. Kennedy, Liza Minelli, Kevin Kostner and Quentin Tarantino.

The manager prides the girls on being “perfectly shaped” and says that most of them are professionally trained.

The 90-minute show is filled with humor, dazzling choreography and barely visible costumes.

Two dancers are from Ukraine and Russia, but unfortunately for all the curious men, the cabaret girls are strictly forbidden to talk to the visitors or the staff.

Whether you believe in miracles or not, you have a chance to witness some astonishing magic on Kyiv’s stage.

<yandex:full-text>Magicians from eight countries, including USA, Belgium, Italy, Latvia, France, Lithuania, Ukraine and Russia will leave you spellbound.

They challenge the laws of physics making people disappear; flowers and objects sprout out of nowhere, and victims cut in half that miraculously get back to their original, unharmed, shapes.

But these magicians don’t just do tricks. Michael Michaels from the US, for instance, is famous for making his audience laugh.

Mantas from Lithuania blends a Gothic spirit, surrealism and philosophy into his act. And Aaron Crow from Belgium is an acclaimed mentalist.

But they each have one thing in common – they will make you believe the unbelievable.
<yandex:full-text>British artist Gary Hume and Canadian photographer Jeff Wall are coming to Eastern Europe – predictably, assisted by this major contemporary art center.

Gary Hume started out by doing “door paintings,” which are life-size representations of hospital doors he has been producing for nearly a decade.

After doors got monotonous, he took interest in something more alive, like human bodies, face expressions, flowers and birds. He favored paintings in household gloss paint on aluminum panel.

However, the forms are hardly recognizable since they are reduced to only several colors and basic shapes.

His exhibition “Beauty” encompasses abstract works curiously titled Rainbow, Anxiety and the Horse, and a sculpture series Bikini.

Jeff Wall uses photography to explore the maturing process of young people. Sixteen photographs and seven light boxes, a signature feature of the photographer, converge in the show entitled “In light, black, colour, white, and dark.”

Wall is also known for his academic achievements in art history. Studying and lecturing through his career, he started experimenting with conceptual art at the age of 24.

His trademark works are large transparent photos he mounts on light boxes. The artist says he was inspired by the back-lit ads at bus stops while traveling in Europe.

Their latest album “Night Work” (2010) had back vocals of Kylie Minogue and Ian McKellen, and their live performances are told to be something very special, with all the glam rock they bring on stage. The show in Kyiv is almost sold out, so hurry up!

Who would think that a Catholic school graduate and ice cream shop boy from a small British town would transform into a rock and guitar legend?

<yandex:full-text>For the third time, Kyiv is hosting British composer, guitarist and singer Chris Rea.

But in several decades on stage, this 60-year old composer and musician manages to treat the audiences with new compositions. This is the fourth time the singer is coming to Kyiv. This time he is bringing his new album “Santo Spirito Blues”, as well as old hits.

When the 22-year old left-handed Camillo Rea picked up the guitar, he went against his nature and learned to play with his right hand. He conquered England first with his major hit, The Road to Hell in 1989, topping the charts in the UK, while in the US it never gained the same traction.

Then followed the hit Auberge, which conquered both the UK and the US charts.

Once the world almost lost this genius musician. Diagnosed with pancreatitis, Rea went through an operation, which gave him half and half chances of survival. This experience pushed him back to the blues.
Drama
Spain 1997, 107’
Language: Spanish with Russian subtitles
Directed by Montxo Armendáriz
Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
Master Class Cultural Center

Childhood seems fun: you can play, run and climb trees all day long, and adults are the ones who know answers to all questions, who will take care of you, and take your troubles away. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy for kids in some families.

Javi, a curious 9-year-old boy, lives at his aunt’s together with his older brother Juan. When summer comes, they visit their parents’ home, a place of shocking tragedy.

Although the boys have been told that their father had killed himself accidentally while cleaning his gun, their mother knows the truth and forbids them to enter the room with a chair, which is still stained with the man’s blood.

Of course, the boys do their best to sneak into the room, as they believe that their father’s spirit is hiding his secrets there.
PSYCHO
Thriller, Mystery, Horror
Brazil 1960, 109’
Language: English with English subtitles
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
Master Class Cultural Center

Suspense hardly matters in modern horror movies, enormously cruel, filled with spooky screams, washed with liters of blood, and often with a predictable plot.

But things were quite different in the middle of the 20th century.

To preserve the suspense of his “Psycho,” not only did Alfred Hitchcock make the crew swear to keep the resolution in secret, but even bought up all copies of the screened novel he managed to find.

This classical black-and-white movie tells the story of a young secretary Marion, who needs money to marry her lover.

Desperate to find another way to get it, she steals $40,000 from her company’s client and runs away from the city.

Caught off guard by storm, she decides to stop for a night in a road motel, where she meets Norman Bates, who owns the place and loads of secrets. He also has a really weird mom.
MY WEEK WITH MARILYN
Biography, Drama
USA 2011, 99’
Language: Ukrainian
Directed by Simon Curtis
Feb. 10-15
Zhovten, Kyiv and others

The posh and gorgeous American actress, singer and model Marilyn Monroe hardly needs introduction.

The blonde with red lips, bright eyes and a sexy little spot on her cheek is still a beauty icon, even 50 years after her death.

Together with her husband, Monroe came to London in 1956 to star in the “The Prince and the Showgirl” movie. When young assistant director Colin Clarkfalls for her, everyone warns him she’s gonna break his heart.

However, what really happened to him remained a mystery – there was a week missed in Clark’s diary, released in 1990s. It takes him years to muster enough courage to divulge what happened that week. He eventually did in 2000.

Ukraine has a score of talent shows, but no awards the likes of the American Grammies to celebrate the best of the best.

<yandex:full-text>To fill in the gap, Yearly Ukrainian National Award, or YUNA, will be launched on Feb. 8.

Among the nominees are Andrii Danylko, Victor Pavlyk, Iryna Bilyk and Taisiia Povalii.

The idea belongs to the owner of ISTIL Group and Kyiv Post publisher Mohammad Zahoor and Pavlo Shylko, better known as DJ Pasha, who will host and produce the show.

YUNA organizers have had quite an adventure in the past few months. They had to overcome the distrust of performers who are used to corrupt shows, the results of which are pre-determined.

They had to convince many foreign stars to come to Ukraine, a nation which has never paid them a penny in royalties.

They had to convince the skeptics in the audience that the show will be unprecedented.

But despite everything, YUNA is going to happen. Organizers are promising many surprises.

Thomas Anders, a pop singer from Germany and the former front man of “Modern Talking,” Karl Frierson, the former leader of “De Phazz” and many other big names will be taking part.

The YUNA ceremony will last for two hours and be edited down to a 1.5-hour televised version that will be broadcast on Inter channel on Feb. 12.

Wed, Feb. 8, 7 p.m., Palats Ukraina, 103 Velyka Vasylkivska St., 247-2303.

Imagine your problems fading away after staring at a colorful circle adorned with diagrams, flowers and shapes.

<yandex:full-text>That is what the mandala is for.

A circular image reflecting the Buddhist vision of spiritual reality is claimed to heal, relieve stress, bring luck and open new possibilities. It can also simply be a highly original piece of art in your home.

Luckily, you don’t need to travel to Tibet to get one. Andrey Zinchuk, an artist and psychologist living in Kyiv, will help you to create a mandala and even teach you the proper way to meditate on it.

In the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, the mandalas are shaped as a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. The focus is where the magic happens – past, present and future converge, erasing barriers of time.

In one form or another, the mandalas have been part of many different cultures – Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, Celtic, South America and even Slavic. In Christianity elements of the mandala can be seen in the art of rose windows or halos.

Le Crazy Horse Cabaret, as they call it in Paris, is definitely not a show for prudes.

<yandex:full-text>This famous erotic show was founded in 1951 offers a “particularly French blend of sophistication and vulgarity,” as A.O. Scott wrote in his New York Times review.

Full of passion, it will excite any warm-blooded person out there.

But don’t be quick to dismiss the Crazy Horse as simply a provocative striptease. They have turned seduction into an art form, and have performed in front of such luminaries as President John F. Kennedy, Liza Minnelli, Kevin Costner and Quentin Tarantino.

The 90-minute show is filled with humor, dazzling choreography and barely visible costumes.

The cabaret’s website, www.lecrazyhorseparis.com, boasts that 2,500 pairs of stockings, 500 liters of body make-up and 300 lipsticks specially made in the shade “Rouge Crazy” (Crazy Red) are used by the dancers each year.

The dancers themselves are called exuberant names such as Diva Novita and Baby Light. All 10 girls are drop dead gorgeous, and could even pass for being sisters.

Founder Allen Bernardine set strict aesthetic criteria for the performers’ height, waist measurements and distance between various body parts.

The troupe is quite international, with dancers hailing from countries such as France, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Italy, Switzerland, Romania and Ukraine.
Online and social media are busting with articles about time management, but what is the recipe of using time wisely for those who have not so much of it left?

James is 29 when he finds out that he has cancer and won’t celebrate his 30th birthday.

Asking his three closest friends to accompany him, the young man heads to his favorite place on earth – a beautiful and wild Welsh beach.

As James has troubles with his legs, his friends help him to move around on a special cart, and the closer their goal is, the harder it is for him to walk, and the more frank their conversations get.

Having no time to change his own life, James tells his pals what’s wrong with theirs.

Strong and beautiful, this drama impresses, without the annoying artificial tear-jerking.

Getting vertigo each time he has to tackle a couple of stairs, he is forced to leave his career.

Hammered by the critics for “weak performances” and “risible dialogues,” Madonna’s movie “W.E” flopped at the 68th Venice Film Festival last September.

However, the 53-year-old American pop icon dismisses the negative feedbacks as exaggerated and evil.

W.E. stands for the names of the main characters: a divorced American woman Wallis Simpson and British king Edward VIII, who falls for her so badly that he gives up his throne to be with his ladylove.

Wally, a lonely writer living in Manhattan of 1998, is the third heroine of the plot – she is so inspired with the romantic and dramatic love story from the 1930th that it prompts her own investigation.

Happy reggae birthday, Bob

<yandex:full-text>Celebrating birthday ahead of time is considered bad luck in Ukraine.
<yandex:full-text>If you have answered no to all of the above, Ideology Music Festival is for you; at least the organizers claim so.

But to enjoy it, you will also have to possess a taste for alternative electronic music.

The ninth annual festival will feature big names specializing in innovative mixes of electronic samples, drum patters and vocals, making up musical styles such as drum’n’bass, dubstep and moombahton.

It will explode on Kyiv’s stage, featuring such international bands as The Prototypes, Alex Calver aka Calvertron, Chasing Shadows, Dubsidia and others.

Many of the genres featuring at the festival have appeared recently.

Moombahton, for instance, was invented by an American DJ only three years ago at his cousin’s high school homecoming party, where he mixed a song called “Moombah” with elements from the Latino genre reggaeton.

So, if you want a night of musical discovery, Ideology might be just for you.

Serbia and Romania are about to face each other in a battle, although one more likely to end in applause than bloodshed.

<yandex:full-text>Two of Europe’s best brass bands, Boban and Marko Markovic Orchestra from Serbia and Romanian Fanfare Ciocarlia (on the photo), will try to top each other off in a brass showdown for the title of the Balkan brass king.

And you get to be the jury!

The Romanians are bringing an army of 12 participants, who proudly embody the gypsy tradition with free-spiritedness, while also paying respect to Turkish and Jewish influences. One of the highlights of the night is the saxophonist firing up the crowd by improvising on a whim. No scores, is the band’s rule.

The Serbian Boban and Marko Markovic Orchestra put maestro trumpet skills above personal relationships. Marko had to practice 10 hours a day to get into his father Boban’s band, which had by then existed for 12 years.

Along with gypsy ethno, the musicians add some archaic jazz and Balkan rhythms to the mix.

When rock-opera “Juno and Avos” premiered in 1981 in Moscow, a flurry of critical reviews followed describing it as anti-Soviet.

<yandex:full-text>The new genre caused enough of an uproar that the play had to be presented as a “modern opera.”

But the show kept gaining popularity and eventually even Pierre Cardin facilitated a performance in Paris, then another one on Broadway and all over Europe. Records sold like hotcakes and composer Aleksiy Rybnikov and libretto poet Anrdiy Rybnikov became household names.
A tragic love story, Juno and Avos are surprisingly the names of two ships, not lovers. Based on real life events, the musical is set in the 18th century when the Russian explorer Nikolai Rezanov ventures to California to replenish supplies for the Russian colony in Alaska.

But there is no escape from love. He meets a beautiful 16 year-old Konchita Arguelyo, the daughter of a San Francisco commander and promises to return for her. But after 35 years of waiting in vain, Konchita ends up as a nun in a monastery.
Now that vintage jewelry made a huge comeback, after photographers are shelving their digital cameras to take photos with film cameras, it seems that silent movies are clawing their way back to big screens.

At least, one of them is. A silent and black-and-white movie, “The Artist”, has a chance of even getting an Oscar this year, as it is among the nine films nominated for Best Picture by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The film tells a story of a narcissistic silent actor George Valentin’s fall. When sound comes to Hollywood in the late 1920s, he just couldn’t bare it.

While Valentin decides to keep producing silent movies, his lover and one of his extras Peppy Miller becomes a film star, using all the advantages of her beautiful voice.
Most often, young women first grow up before getting pregnant. But 17 school girls from a small town in Brittany decide that pregnancy will be their ticket to adulthood.

When she discovers she is pregnant, Camille convinces her girlfriends that it’s cool, and from now on, only those of her friends who are also growing bellies, will be allowed into her inner circle.

To the shock of parents and teachers, girls get pregnant one by one, seducing or even bribing their boyfriends.

Based on a real story of 18 girls in America who agreed on a “pregnancy pact,” the drama provokes mixed feelings, from laughter to confusion and shows an unusual angle of the subject of early pregnancy.
