The craziest of flying machines competed in Kyiv on June 19 for the opportunity to demonstrate their aircrafts at an international competition in Lisbon, Portugal, on Sept. 4.
Some 700 applications were filed for the competition, with the jury choosing 40 of them.
Their names were as bizarre as the machines themselves: The Penguins from the Kyiv Zoo, Sausages in Batter, Odessa Sprat and Who Told You Only Real Airplanes Can Fly?
According to the rules, organized by the Red Bull soft drink company, the hand-made aircraft had to take off from a six-meter springboard overlooking the Dnipro River’s left bank. The flights are judged by three criteria: flight distance, design and artistry.
Having fun and making the audience laugh were the real goals of the show.
