You're reading: Ukraine and France to sign agreement in Cannes on joint filmmaking, says state cinema agency head

Ukrainian Culture Minister Mykhailo Kulyniak and his French counterpart Frederic Mitterrand will sign an agreement on joint filmmaking between Ukraine and France during the Cannes Film Festival, State Cinema Agency Head Kateryna Kopylova has said.

"This year, for the first time in the history of Ukraine’s independence, a bilateral agreement will be signed on joint [film] production between the two countries of Ukraine and France," she said at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday.

According to Kopylova, the signing of the two-year agreement will take place in Cannes on May 14.

President of the Ukrainian Cinema Foundation Andriy Khalpahchi, in turn, said that nine Ukrainian short films will be presented at the Cannes Film Festival, but there will be no full-length Ukrainian films screened at the festival.

In addition, a film festival with the title "The New Ukrainian Cinema" will be held in the Ukrainian National Pavilion as part of the Cannes Film Festival from May 11-21.

According to Khalpahchi, the Ukrainian National Pavilion, which is being organized by the State Cinema Agency in cooperation with the Ukrainian Cinema Foundation, will cost EUR 50,000 to run.
