Tim Burton's film beat Avatar's record for a UK 3D opening by 26 percent. LONDON, March 9 (Reuters Life!) - Disney's 3D version of "Alice in Wonderland" shot to the top of the British box office over the weekend with an impressive 10.5 million pound ($15.74 million) take, Screen International said on Mar. 9.

Tim Burton's film, with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, beat Avatar's record for a UK 3D opening by 26 percent.

It also set a UK record for a film released in March, traditionally a quiet period for major movies.

Director James Cameron's Avatar was down in second place after 10 weeks at the top while "The Crazies," a rehash of a little-known 1970s zombie-horror, was unchanged at three.

Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz in ethereal thriller "The Lovely Bones," were down two spots at four, while Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" dropped one place to fifth.

John Travolta's latest offering, "From Paris With Love," rose two to six, just above "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," the tale of a modern high school and ancient Greek gods, which slipped two to seventh.

Eighth, down one, was romantic comedy "Leap Year," with Amy Adams as a Boston woman who travels to Ireland to propose to her new boyfriend.

"Valentine's Day" was down three at nine and "A Single Man" slipped one place to 10th.
