Spencer Tunick's at work. LONDON (Reuters) - American photographer and artist Spencer Tunick, famous for persuading people to pose naked for his camera en masse, is trying to recruit 1,000 volunteers to strip off in Manchester.

Tunick aims to pay homage to British painter L.S. Lowry and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Lowry, the Salford arts centre where most of the painter's work is displayed.

Volunteers will be asked to shed their clothes and pose naked in eight locations in Salford and Manchester over the first weekend of May.

The resulting works work will be shown at The Lowry in June in an exhibition entitled "Everyday People."

"Salford and Manchester present an intriguing prospect for my latest UK installation based on both the rich industrial heritage that exists across both cities and the art of L.S. Lowry," Tunick wrote on The Lowry's website.

"L.S. Lowry's paintings depicting the mass of everyday people who contributed to the industrial machine of the 20th century also provide an interesting frame of reference in terms of the compositional possibilities of the installations," he added.

Tunick has created installations of nudes in cities across the world, from Montreal to Melbourne and Barcelona to Buenos Aires. His largest project took place in Mexico City in 2007, where he photographed a group of 18,000 naked people.
