You're reading: ‘Magical String’ by Amjad Ali Khan

Kyiv’s Opera and Ballet theater will host the unique concert of classical Indian music starring the world’s best known master of the sarod (a traditional Indian string instrument), Amjad Ali Khan. The main basis of classical Indian music is raga – a melodic mode which represents a series of five or more musical notes, from which the melody is created. Ragas are associated with different times of day (daytime raga cannot be performed in the evening) and even seasons. The best Indian musicians create their own ragas and so does Amjad Ali Khan, who represents a sixth generation of sarod musicians family. The musician has collected many awards, including a UNESCO award, UNICEF’s National Ambadassorship and Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum among others and performed at world famous venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall and Kennedy Center and numerous festivals. Continuing his family tradition, Ali Khan taught the art of sarod to his own sons, Amaan and Ayaan, who will also take part in the upcoming Kyiv concert.
