You're reading: Paul van Dyk

World-famous DJ Paul van Dyk is coming to play a major show at Kyiv’s International Expo Center.

Born Matthias Paul in 1971 in Germany, van Dyk was named the World’s No.1 DJ by DJ Magazine in 2005 and 2006, and has remained in its top 10 since 1998.

By 2007 he has sold over 3 million albums worldwide. The future DJ grew up in East Berlin, listening to forbidden Western radio stations and mixtapes smuggled into the country. Van Dyk played his first deejay set in 1991 and soon got a chance to perform in some prestigious Berlin clubs.

For a couple of years he collaborated with deejay Cosmic Baby in the project Visions of Shiva. In 1996 Van Dyk released his second album “Seven Ways,” which established him as a trance pioneer and brought him his first success in Britain – the record was voted No. 1 by readers of DJ Magazine.

His first mix album “The Politics of Dancing” (2001) was promoted by a world tour. On 2003’s record “Reflections” Van Dyk demonstrated his softer side inspired by his trips to India.

The record was nominated for a Best Electronic Album Grammy. In 2007 he released the album “In Between” which took him three years to record. Van Dyk produced the album himself and included famous collaborators such as David Byrne of Talking Heads, Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls, Ryan Merchant and Wayne Jackson. Nowadays, van Dyk also stands out for the techniques he uses in his sets. He uses two laptops and MIDI keyboards, thus making his performance more similar to a concert than a standard disco.
