For engineer Andre Laban life changed forever in 1952 when he joined the team of legendary sea explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau on his ship Calypso. Laban spent 20 years working with him as cameraman, and even shot the Oscar-winning documentary “The Silent World” directed by Cousteau and Louis Malle. Later he became Cousteau’s marine pilot. In 1962, Laban started a new trend in art when he painted his first work under water, depicting landscapes as scuba divers see them. To accomplish this, he covered the canvas with special liquid, used oil paint and a palette knife instead of a brush. As for Laban’s photographs, they are humorous and original self-portraits made in 1973-1983.
