Little Ashes

Language: English

Drama/UK (2008)

Directed by Paul Morrison

Starring Robert Pattinson, Javier Beltran, Matthew McNulty and Marina Gatell.

Turns out, Robert Pattinson – whose poster from the film “Twilight” probably now hangs in every other teenage girl’s bedroom – played in a “serious” movie, before he got involved in the top popular vampire saga. He played none other than the genius Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali. The film tells of the young and ambitious Dali. He just arrived at university in Madrid and quickly attracts attention of two celebrity students – future great poet Federico Garcia Lorca and future iconic film director Luis Bunuel. For some time the three remain the most modern group in Madrid. But after a time Bunuel drifts away, and Dali and Lorca form a truly intimate friendship.

Prophet

Language: French

Comedy/USA (2009)

Directed by Jacques Audiard

Starring Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif and others

The winner of the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes 2009, “A Prophet” by Jacques Audiard is a fascinating story of a man who grows into a personality while locked inside prison walls. French Arab Malik El Djebena is sentenced to six years in a corrupt prison ran by criminal clans. Starting off vulnerable, shy and inarticulate, he’s easily bullied by the leader of the prison’s Corsican gang. But El Djebena quickly shows change. Almost illiterate at the start, he learns all that he needs to know not only to survive but also to advance in his career behind the bars. Best known internationally for the films “Read My Lips” and “The Beat That My Heart Skipped,” French director Audiard once again shows himself as master of emotional intensity and careful study of human nature.
