‘Cannes Weekend’
Dec 11, 2009 at 00:37 | Alexandra Matoshko
Not many Kyivans can afford to visit the actual Cannes festival in France, but they can still become a part of it by visiting the Weekend in Cannes festival in Kyiv cinema on Dec. 11-16. The program naturally features some of the hits of the latest Cannes, shown in the original language with Ukrainian subtitles. Coincidentally only one of the films is in English. The other four are in French. Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist” was nominated for Golden Palm and brought the Best Actress award to Charlotte Gainsbourg. Known for his rather shocking film works, the Danish director went all the way this time. The story of a husband and wife coping with the death of their small child is not just extremely expressive and dramatic – it contains such gory scenes of violence that not many viewers are be able to sit through, without at least covering their eyes. “Les Beaux Gosses” (French Kissers) by Riad Sattouf is a story of two adolescent boys coping with the difficulties of growing up and fantasizing about girls in class and their mothers. So far, they hardly manage to even talk to girls, but everything is about to change. “A L’Origine” (In the Beginning) is a comedy with a romantic twist about a professional conman (Francois Cluzet) who manages to pass himself as the boss of a major construction site building a highway extension and enjoys making loads of money until he meets a woman mayor of a small town that the highway is supposed to go through. “Ne Te Retourne Pas” (Don’t Look Back) by Marina de Van is a mysterious story of a woman writer (Sophie Marceau) who starts seeing strange things and changes in her body, and at some point finds herself transformed into another woman (Monica Belucci). Finale film of the Cannes Weekend fest, “A Prophet” (Un Prophet), has been showing in Kyiv’s cinemas for several weeks now. The movie by Jacques Audiard won the Grand Prix at Cannes, and tells a story of a French Arab man who builds his personality while locked inside prison walls.
Kyiv (19 Chervonoarmiyska, 234-3380). Dec. 11-16.
