Oct 29, 2009 at 20:42 | Alexandra Matoshko
Gipsy Django Jazz festival is dedicated to legendary Belgian Gypsy jazz musician Jango Reinhardt (1910-1953). The concert lineup features Ukrainian guitarist Oleksy Krupsky, German guitarist Janko Lauenberger and violinist Berndt Huber, and Erik Grop from Sweden playing double bass. Together with Ferret brothers, Reinhardt is considered the founder of Manouche jazz a.k.a. gypsy jazz or gypsy swing. Gypsy jazz is based on waltz-musette – a dance that became popular in France in the end of the 19th century. However Reinhardt’s innovation was to combine gypsy jazz and swing thus creating a style based on improvisation and rapid performing manner. The leading musicians performing this style nowadays are Stochelo Rosenberg, Bireli Lagrene and Angelo Debarre.
