You're reading: Okean Elzy and Bi-2 to rock Maidan

Ukrainian Okean Elzy and Russian Bi-2 will strike up the air with high quality rock at Kyiv’s Independence Square.

Both bands have been around for a while, have their own unique style and know how to get your heart pumping.

Okean Elzy is arguably Ukraine’s most popular rock band, which sold over a million copies of their albums to date. In English, the band’s name means Elza’s ocean. Band leader Svyatoslav Vakarchuk said the beauty of an ocean and a harmony the female name are much needed in the men’s band. Most of their songs are written in the Ukrainian language.

Bi-2’s fame skyrocketed after they had released a soundtrack to the movie “Brother-2” called “Polkovniku nikto ne pishet” (“No one writes to the colonel”). This song is also known to have been played at the Russian Kursk submarine seconds before it sank.

Bi-2 often experiments with styles and instruments. In 2009, the band recorded an album together with the symphonic orchestra of Russian Ministry of Home Affairs.
