Blacksmiths in action

Ethnic festivals seem to be in fashion this summer.

So if you are not tired of authentic arts and crafts shows yet, check out the blacksmiths’ festival in Kyivan Rus Park this weekend.

Some 30 blacksmiths will showcase the process of making jewelry, weapons, gates or whatever else your home needs.

The festival won’t be just a trip history. Modern equipment and artifacts will be displayed along medieval horseshoes.

The Blacksmith profession was mastered in Ukraine centuries before our era. Western and central parts of the country were rich in bog and iron ores, so people there were first to learn how to turn out hammers and nails. Nowadays though, most industrial action with metals happens in the east.

Nevertheless, the Blacksmith profession has left its mark across the country. Koval, which means Blacksmith, is a popular surname across the country, just like Smith is in England.

Park Kyivan Rus, July 31-Aug 1, shuttle bus from metro Vydubychi.

Tickets: Hr 30
