(www.vsirivni.com.ua) To raise awareness of domestic violence in Ukraine, the European Union is organizing a flash mob on July 31.

“All Are Equal” campaign activists are asking everyone to wear a piece of crimson clothing and come to Saint Sophia’s square to form a giant living circle.

In Ukraine, some 18 million women are believed to suffer from domestic violence, according to the National Academy of Sciences research.

Some 200,000 crimson bracelets will be distributed among attendees.

Charity gel wrist bands have been popular in waves throughout the western world but have never got hold of Ukraine.

Crimson stands for raspberries, which in Eastern Europe are believed to have healing powers against colds.

Campaign activists hope crimson will help curb violence at home and remind of gender equality. The first 250 participants will receive head bands and t-shirts with campaign logos.

After the launch in Kyiv, similar flash mobs will be organized in Odesa, Lviv, Donetsk regions and the Crimea.

Other events will include billboard ads, festivals and mobile glass boxes with people in them to pass the message that offenders often look just like ordinary people.

In Ukraine, where a large amount of domestic violence is believed to go unrecorded by official government statistics, the campaign takes on a special meaning.
