You're reading: Yanukovych sees no politics behind investigation into Gongadze case

Singapore, March 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The criminal case opened against former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma is intended to complete the process in the case on the murder of journalist Georgy Gongadze, and to dot the i's and cross the t's in this case, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"All of this is quite natural… We have to get answers to all of the questions that have been dragged out over time, that is, more than ten years. Rumors that this process is turning into a modern political process are, I would say, just rumors," he told reporters in Singapore on March 28.

Yanukovych agreed that the opening a criminal case against former President Leonid Kuchma (1994-2005) was "unpleasant" for the former president.

"As they say, nobody would envy him, but in the end, it’s necessary to put an end to this," he said.

Yanukovych said only the courts could give answers to all of the questions about the murder of Gongadze.

"We are confident that in a legal state that we are building no one has the right to blame or condemn someone until a court ruling is issued," Yanukovych said.

In this regard, he said people should "store up patience and culture in order not to create sensations."

"There are certain procedures that have to be conducted," Yanukovych said.
