You're reading: Ukrainian lawyer Ihor Fomin also to defend Kuchma

Second Ukrainian President (1994-2005) Leonid Kuchma has said his defence must be strengthened.

According to him, he asked lawyer Ihor Fomin to defend him and added that he has not yet met with his new U.S. lawyer.

"I’m ready to go through this for the sake of the main goal – the truth. I need the truth, Ukraine needs the truth…" he told reporters in Kyiv on Monday before his visit to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

"I have not yet met with [my new American lawyer]," Kuchma said, when asked whether his lawyer from the United States has advised him on any strategy for his defence.

"I believe that this has to be sorted out a little bit, as today I will have one more lawyer, a local one. His name is Ihor Fomin," Kuchma said.

"In my view, this side [the defence] must be strengthened," he added.

"If we want to achieve the truth, then we must have a good evidential basis from the both sides," the former president said.

There were reports in the mass media with reference to the Financial Times that U.S. lawyer Alan Dershowitz will defend second Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in case on the murder of journalist Georgy Gongadze.

Dershowitz, a professor at Harvard Law School, is well known for his participation in many famous criminal cases.
