You're reading: Kuchma, Melnychenko could meet face to face on Wednesday

Second Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma (1994-2005) has said that a face-to-face meeting with Major Mykola Melnychenko, a former officer of the Department of State Guard of Ukraine, was not held on Monday, as his new lawyer has not yet examined the criminal case opened against him.

"There was no [face-to-face meeting] for a simple reason. I have a new lawyer, and he has yet to examine my case, and we asked for a break to be made until the day after tomorrow," he told journalists in Kyiv on Monday, after another round of questioning at the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Melnychenko, after visiting the Prosecutor General’s Office, in turn, told reporters: "The face-to-face meeting was planned for today, but it did not take place due to the fact that Leonid Danylovych [Kuchma] has a new lawyer, and he asked [the investigators] to examine the case. The meeting was moved to Wednesday at the request of the lawyer."

Melnychenko said he hoped that the meeting would take place on Wednesday.
