The complete decommissioning of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant will take 100 years, deputy head of the Ukrainian state agency for the exclusion zone Dmytro Bobro has said.

"The entire period of decommissioning the Chornobyl nuclear power plant is mapped out for 100 years," he said during a Monday press tour for media representatives to the Chornobyl zone.

He said that the same applies to the shelter facility.

"Sites hazardous form the viewpoint of radiation threats are the main reason for such length," Bobro said.

He said it is quite difficult to estimate the total spending on decommissioning the facility but about UAH 1 billion will have to be assigned annually during the next five years.

It will be 25 years on April 26 since the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. The plant was officially shut down on Dec. 15, 2000.

Meanwhile, the sarcophagus built over the fourth breakdown reactor is gradually falling apart. Ukraine is building a new shelter facility above sarcophagus.
