U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft has thanked the Ukrainian government and the crew of the Kostiantyn Olshansky ship for the evacuation of U.S. citizens from Libya, the press service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry has reported.

"We are deeply grateful to the government of Ukraine, especially to the crew of the Kostiantyn Olshansky and to Ukrainian diplomats who facilitated the evacuation, for helping Americans to get out of harm’s way," he said.

Tefft recalled that the Ukrainian vessel had delivered 18 U.S. citizens to Malta.

He said that the Americans were among the nearly 200 evacuees that the Kostiantyn Olshansky and its crew rescued from Tripoli on April 4. U.S. consular officials met the Americans in Malta, he added.

Tefft also described coordination with Ukraine on the evacuation as "truly outstanding."

"It is not only a sign of the strength of our relationship, but an example of the positive role that Ukraine plays on the world stage," he said.
