Ukraine ought to assist Japan in overcoming the consequences of the accident at its nuclear power plant, taking into account the country's experience of the Chornobyl tragedy, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

At a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) on April 8, Yanukovych noted that the threat of radioactive contamination in Japan comes not only from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, but now also from the Onagawa NPP. Ukraine needs to look at these events in the light of its own experience, the president said.

"The [Chornobyl] tragedy and the bitter experience the Ukrainian people have had, are currently calling for increased attention to and increased assistance in overcoming the consequences of such tragedies," the president said.
