The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has recommended that Ukrainians who are in Syria leave the country as soon as possible, using the services of commercial airlines.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Dykusarov said at a briefing on Wednesday that "due to the deteriorating security situation in Syria, the Foreign Ministry strongly recommends that citizens of Ukraine should not travel to this country at this stage, and those Ukrainians who are on Syrian soil and who don’t need to be there should leave the country."

"Citizens of Ukraine who decide to stay in Syria are encouraged to register at the consular department of the Ukrainian Embassy in Damascus, where citizens of Ukraine are received on a daily basis," he said.

Dykusarov also noted that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry had called on Ukrainians in Syria to refrain from making trips to cities where the situation is tense, and not to visit places where mass demonstrations are held.

The number of Ukrainians in Syria is being specified. Dykusarov said that it could be several hundred people.

When asked about the possible evacuation of Ukrainians from Syria, Dykusarov noted that there was currently no such need, s the situation had not worsened and flights are still being conducted.
