The For Ukraine! Party has asked Ukrainian ombudsperson Nina Karpachova to provide assistance in gaining the release of former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko from custody.

"We demand that Human Rights Commissioner Nina Karpachova immediately intervene in the situation and assist in obtaining a speedy release of Yuriy Lutsenko, given the threat to his health and life," the press service of the party quoted its leader Viacheslav Kyrylenko as saying.

He said that "an eight-day hunger strike directly poses a threat to Yuriy Lutsenko’s life."

Earlier, former Ukrainian Prime Minister and Batkivschyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko made a similar request to Karpachova.

Meanwhile, the media liaisons department of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine reported that statements by Lutsenko’s lawyers and his wife that the ex-minister had gone on hunger strike and refused to eat since April 22 were untrue.
