Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he believes that the main task for the Ukrainian authorities is to pull Ukraine out of "the historical pit of the transitional period."

"Our task is to pull Ukraine out of the historical pit of the transitional period, in which it found itself as a result of constant crises, and as a result of the struggle for power and property," he said at celebrations to mark the 66th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War (World War II) in Kyiv on Thursday.

Yanukovych said that Ukraine should become "a contemporary country of the 21st century and establish itself as a modern state that creates history, along with the world’s most ambitious countries."

He also stressed the need to ensure in practice that there was justice and the rule of law in the country.
