Ukraine has tightened control over vegetable imports from EU member countries, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said in Kyiv on Thursday.

"Ukraine started taking measures since the very beginning of people’s poisoning with vegetables in Germany], but the measures were not advertised. Border guards were ordered to tighten control over European vegetable imports, and that is being done," he said.

More than 1,200 people contracted E-Coli bacteria in Germany. The infection killed 15 people in Germany and one in Sweden.

The German authorities said at first that the infection came from Spanish cucumbers. The German Agriculture Ministry admitted later that Spanish cucumbers were not dangerous for consumers.
