You're reading: Number of patients with cholera in Mariupol grows to eight

Three more cases of cholera have been registered in Mariupol, and a carrier of Vibrio cholerae has been detected, the head of the department of especially dangerous infections at the Mariupol sanitary epidemiological station, Larysa Antonova, told Interfax-Ukraine on Friday.

"Yes, we have three more cases, and Vibrio cholerae was detected in one person," she said.

Antonova said that all four patients had been hospitalized in the infectious disease ward.

Ukraine’s chief state sanitary doctor Serhiy Ryzhenko said that three of the four patients hospitalized on Friday were members of the same family.

"The victims are members of the same family who were poisoned due to the consumption of fish, which they bought at a market on May 24 and cooked at home. Thus, eight laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera were recorded in Mariupol as of June 3," the Health Ministry’s press service quoted Ryzhenko as saying.

All of the patients with cholera are receiving the necessary medical treatment.

Anti-epidemic restrictive measures are being taken.
