You're reading: Swiss Ukrainians to come to Ukraine to mark 20th anniversary of its independence

Bern, June 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Members of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Switzerland are planning to come to Ukraine to participate in events to mark the 20th anniversary of the country's independence, President of the Ukrainian Society in Switzerland Andrej Lushnycky said at a meeting between Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn and members of the society in Bern on June 7 evening.

Lushnycky spoke about the activities of the society and its cooperation with the Ukrainian Embassy, and added that a newspaper in the Ukrainian language was being published in Switzerland and that a daughter of Ukrainian Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky was participating in the activity of the society, providing financial support. He said that she gave the society the diaries of the hetman, which were transferred to Ukraine last year.

In addition, the Ukrainian society is working on the creation of a center of Taras Shevchenko and preparing for events to mark the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. Lushnycky said that during his visit to Ukraine, the delegation would participate in a meeting of the Ukrainian World Congress.

Lytvyn and Lushnycky also discussed an initiative to organize a visit by a delegation of Swiss winemakers to Odesa region. They also spoke about cooperation in scientific and educational matters, and the organization of student exchanges.

Moreover, Lytvyn met with President of the Swiss-Ukrainian Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group and Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Parliament Christa Markwalder.
