The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a draft decree by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Ukraine's military doctrine, taking into account proposals made by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC).

A statement posted on the Web site of the Ukrainian government on Thursday says that First Deputy Defense Minister Volodymyr Mozharovsky presented the draft presidential decree at a government meeting on June 22.

The draft presidential decree on Ukraine’s military doctrine was earlier discussed at a meeting chaired by NSDC Secretary Raisa Bohatyriova and with the participation of First Deputy Prime Minister Andriy Kliuyev, NSDC Deputy Secretary Volodymyr Sivkovych, Defense Minister Mykhailo Yezhel and Director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies Andriy Yermolayev.

The amendments proposed by the National Security and Defense Council concern Articles 9, 12 and 19 linked to the description of trends in the development of the military and political situation surrounding Ukraine and the possibility of military conflicts, in which the country may be involved.

"According to the revised principles of Ukraine’s domestic and foreign policy, the document foresees the observance by Ukraine of its non-aligned policy, the provisions of the new draft national security strategy of Ukraine and the consistent implementation by Ukraine of the policy of rejecting military force as a means of achieving political goals," reads the statement.
