You're reading: Ukraine not interested in high interest loans from IMF

Ukraine is not interested in raising high interest loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as it was done by the previous government, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"The program with the IMF suggests the stability of our banking system, because the programs with the IMF are the evidence that Ukraine is highly competitive. This influences our credit ratings… We will never raise credits under the similar percentage as did the previous government – 27-28%. This is absurd," Yanukovych said in an interview with the national television channels recorded on Friday and broadcast on Tuesday.

The president did not rule out that in the future they will have to look into such policy by the previous government.

"This is yet a question, which also need to be answered," the president said.

According to Yanukovych, Ukraine is currently taking loans from the IMF at an interest rate ranging from 5.7% to 6.5%. "So far … This is high, but it’s not 28%," he concluded.
