You're reading: Special status of Sevastopol to be retained

Sevastopol, July 1 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Sevastopol City State Administration Head Volodymyr Yatsuba has said he will make every effort to retain a special status for Sevastopol.

“There have been many discussions recently about the place of Sevastopol on the Crimean map. There are many options: the inclusion in the autonomy’s composition, the loss of a status. I promise we will retain a special status as it is stipulated in the constitution. It’s not just words. It’s my principle. I was engaged in those [activities] so that Sevastopol could have its special status, and I believe we will hardly live till the moment when somebody will raise this issue,” he said at a meeting of the city council on Thursday.

The administration head called on deputies to support his position regarding the issue of Sevastopol’s special status.

“This [the issue of special status] depends on the coordinated work of MPs of Ukraine and deputies of the city council, as I hope for your support in this matter. Success of all undertakings lies in unity. Only on conditions of the consolidation of branches of government we can count on something,” Yatsuba said.

At the same time, he noted that as there is no relevant law, “the absence of clear regulations leaves possibilities for wide interpretation of a range of aspects, which inevitably leads to conflicts, violations of laws, first of all, in the land sector”.

According to Yatsuba, the situation can be resolved if all officials observe a general plan for Sevastopol’s development.
