Kherson, August 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he does not call into question the court resolutions stripping Ukrainian Insurgent Army commander-in-chief Roman Shukhevych and Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists leader Stepan Bandera of the Hero of Ukraine title, awarded to them by former President Viktor Yuschenko posthumously.
When asked by journalists in the Kherson region on Thursday whether or not he thought that the Ukrainian opposition’s statements criticizing these court rulings were fair, Yanukovych said: "I have never called into question the decisions made by any courts."
"Order will be restored to the state only after society starts to treat them the same," the president said.
"People themselves become heroes. No one can give them these titles. But if we look at our past history and build our future based on this history, which had numerous contradictions, we will rob our future, which is wrong," Yanukovych said.
The president said he had repeatedly asked contemporaries and historians to assess Ukraine’s history.
"This is how I treat these issues," he said.
