Ukrainian opposition wants urgent parliamentary session over Tymoshenko arrest

Aug 6, 2011 at 13:51 | Kyiv Post
The Ukrainian opposition plans to initiate the convention of an extraordinary session of the Verkhovna Rada, deputy speaker Mykola Tomenko said, according to Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

"The parliament remains the only place today where opposition can at least present an alternative viewpoint on the events in Ukraine and on the authorities' unprecedented undemocratic steps," Tomenko told journalists.

The Friday arrest of Batkivschyna party leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko calls for the parliament to assess "the situation of lawlessness in Ukraine, which is obviously encouraged by the president and the authorities in general," he said.
