Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has assured his Czech counterpart Vaclav Klaus that he does not interfere with activities of Ukrainian courts and does not intend to do so.

"Ukraine’s judicial system is independent and impartial, and is guided in its work solely by the Constitution and laws of Ukraine" Yanukovych said in a letter addressed to the Czech president.

"I cannot and will not interfere with the work of Ukrainian courts. If I did, the problems would be more significant. I believe that political and any other interference in court activities is unacceptable," Yanukovych said.

Czech President Klaus earlier requested assurances from Yanukovych that the trial of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was not politically motivated.
