You're reading: Yanukovych’s book to be released by 20th anniversary of Ukrainian independence

The book by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, "Ukraine - the land of opportunities," will be released in English ahead of the 20th anniversary of the country's independence.

"I started writing it when I was still in the opposition, and finished it just now, while on holiday. I will tell you right away: I wanted this book to be read first and foremost outside of Ukraine. This is why I asked a number of international publishing houses to print my book. One of the first to respond was the Vienna-based publishing house Mandelbaum Verlag, which is printing "Ukraine – the land of opportunities," the Ukrainian president said in an interview with the Obozrevatel ("Observer") portal, part of which was posted on the website on Tuesday.

"At the height of the pre-election political battles [. . .] I thought: What does the world know about Ukraine, my country, my homeland? Are they really going to judge us, Ukraine and Ukrainians, by these squabbles, scandals and political wars? Are we really living in such a country? Is it really the only thing that Ukrainians are capable of?" Yanukovych said.

I wanted to write about "the real Ukraine, its uneasy path and enormous aspiration for democracy and prosperity, its unique opportunities and fantastic potential," he said.

It is regrettable that Ukraine is little known in Europe and worldwide, he said.

"Many even hardly realize that our country is probably one of the best places for investment in the modern world. As the president, I wanted to deliver this truth about it to as many Europeans, Americans and Canadians as possible. To all those business and energetic people who are looking for new markets to invest their business ideas, initiatives and enterprises. And naturally, their finances," the president said.

The book is released in English. Very soon it will also be published in German, Ukrainian and Russian, Yanukovych said.
