The commission for selecting a site for the location of a nuclear fuel fabrication plant for VVER-1000 reactors at its final meeting on August 18, 2011 recommended that the facility be located near Smoline (Kirovohrad region), reads a posting on the Web site of the state-run concern Nuclear Fuel.

The report says that the decision was made after studying three sites: near Zhovti Vody (Dnipropetrovsk region), Slavutych (Kyiv region) and Smoline (Kirovohrad region).

"The commission took the majority decision to recommend the site near Smoline, as it is in line with the set criteria and the requirements for the placement of the nuclear fuel fabrication plant," reads the report.

As reported, Russian nuclear fuel maker TVEL and Ukraine’s Nuclear Fuel state concern signed an agreement on this plant’s construction at the end of last year. It is to have output capacity of 400 tonnes of uranium per year. TVEL subsidiaries OJSC Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant and OJSC Mashinostroitelny Zavod will also be involved in the project.

The terms of the signed agreement say that Ukraine is to gain a controlling stake in the future plant and obtain fuel-making technology before 2020.
